One More View on the Election

My sister, Kate, gave my a book a few years ago "The Good Citizen's Handbook" It was printed in 2001, but refrences sources from the 40's and 50's. On page 108 it speaks of a citizens duty to register and vote. It reads: The first duty of every citizen of voting age is to become a voter. When you first become a voter, you will probably be asked whether you wish to enroll in a political party. Many voters do not want to do this. Either they are not interested in politics, or they wish to be "independant" - that is, not bound to a political party. The only choice you must make is what or whom to vote for. Many people feel their vote is insignificant among the millions of votes cast. This is not true. A change of just one vote in each precint would have reversed the outcome of many elections, not only at state and local, but congressional and presidential contests as well. When we criticize our government and political leaders for high taxes, inflation, or laxity in law enforcement, we criticize ourselves. We make the laws under whick we live. By voting or failing to vote we elect our leaders to public office. To me this is timeless advice. In this election and the last the out come is/was determined by only a few hundred votes. Although my vote was cast for Bush and the State went to Kerry. I have the peace of mind that I did my part and tried to make a difference. That is all I can do. Next election I will do the same. Congratulations President Bush!
